WHAT IS A JACKSON 6700-STYLE TAMPER?
The Jackson 6700 is a production tamping workhead design, historically associated with Harsco Rail, that has been widely used in North American mainline and turnout tamping programs. It uses paired vibrator assemblies — typically two or four motors — to deliver consistent squeeze force and high-frequency compaction across the tine set. The Series 67 is built around this workhead geometry, which means operators already trained on 6700-style equipment will recognize the tool behavior and maintenance requirements. For Class 1 railroads and large contractors running production programs, that familiarity reduces training time and simplifies parts sourcing.
CAN AN EXCAVATOR-MOUNTED TAMPER HANDLE PRODUCTION MAINLINE WORK?
It depends on the scope. A dedicated continuous tamping machine will always outpace an excavator attachment on a long, uninterrupted surfacing run. But the Series 67 in a 4-motor configuration is built for high-output work — 8 tines, 46Hz frequency, 360° rotation — and is used on Class 1 and major contractor MOW programs for production tamping in situations where a full tamping machine isn’t available, isn’t cost-effective to mobilize, or can’t access the work zone. For tie replacement projects, turnout programs, and supplemental tamping alongside a production crew, the Series 67 closes the gap considerably.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2-MOTOR AND 4-MOTOR CONFIGURATIONS?
Both use Harsco-style vibrator assemblies and the same Jackson 6700-style workhead. The 2-motor models (4 tines, twin cylinder) are suited for spot tamping, turnout maintenance, and programs where the carrier is a backhoe loader or mid-size excavator. The 4-motor models (8 tines, four cylinders) are built for production surfacing on larger carriers — 16 to 25-ton excavators — where flow requirements and machine weight support the heavier assembly.
