FAQ
CAN A TAMPER ATTACHMENT REPLACE A DEDICATED TAMPING MACHINE?
For production surfacing of continuous mainline track, no — a dedicated tamper is still the right tool. But for spot maintenance, turnout work, crib compaction after undercutting, and any job where deploying a production tamper isn’t cost-effective or logistically practical, an attachment like the Series 14 gets the work done on machines already on site. Most MOW crews use both: production equipment for scheduled surfacing programs, and an excavator- or backhoe-mounted tamper for the work that falls between those runs.
WHAT MACHINES DOES THE SERIES 14 FIT?
The Series 14 mounts to backhoe loaders — including Cat 420 and 430, and Case 580 and 590 series — hydraulic excavators from 8 to 20 tons, and grapple trucks with single-pin crane-style connections. It’s available with a bolt-on adapter for tiltrotator coupler systems, and a custom hydraulic kit is available for machines with only a single auxiliary circuit.
WHAT IS A TWIN-TAMPER CONFIGURATION, AND WHEN WOULD I USE ONE?
The Series 14 twin-tamper mounts two workheads to a beam, spaced to standard gauge. It’s designed for hi-railed excavators (15-ton and larger) working directly over the track in switch and crossing applications, where a single workhead would require constant repositioning. Each workhead has an independent hydraulic lift so it can be stowed when clearance is tight. If your crew is doing volume switch tamping, the twin configuration cuts the number of machine moves significantly.
